On the move:
The Chamber will be represented at the
important Development Control Committee meeting which
will consider two elements of the Bath Transportation
Package. Ian Bell will stress the importance to
business of the scheme going ahead. Meanwhile a
public consultation will start on July 23rd at the
Hilton Hotel, Walcot Street when an exhibition will set
out various design elements.
Have your
say: There are three chances to contribute to a
discussion about how the local economy should look
twenty years from now and what steps need to be taken to
bring it to fruition. Monday July 6th, 6.00pm – the
Wine Bar, Keynsham High Street Tuesday July 7th,
6.00pm – The Old Town Hall, Midsomer Norton Wednesday

Freight
loads: The Council is considering the
possibility of creating a Freight Consolidation Centre
to serve Bath City Centre. Large vehicles would
drop goods off and they would be shipped into the centre
on smaller vehicles. It is important that businesses let
their views be known, so please return the
questionnaire. If you have not received a copy
contact Colin_Rees@bathnes.gov.uk
The closing date is July 10th.
Bus lane:
A 700 metre lane for buses, taxis, cyclists and
motorcycles has been created on the approach to the Odd
Down Park & Ride roundabout. It will be a
particular boon to commuters into Bath from Midsomer
Norton.
Just the ticket: Bath
and North East Somerset Council is to hold discussions
with local bus operators about creating a scheme for
season tickets that could be used across all services
from the end of September.
Read all about
it: The Bath Chronicle is to abandon its
monthly glossy business magazine and replace it with a
monthly supplement which will be included in the main
paper. The first edition is due to be published at
the end of July.
Shop till you drop:
Work is still going on to produce the £70,000
publicity campaign to attract regional visitors. Most of
the funds were raised from property owners with a
contribution coming from the Council. It’s expected the
adverts will appear in September.
Up and
away: Bristol International Airport has
submitted a planning application which includes a major
expansion of the terminal building and the construction
of a multi storey car park. Full details at www.bristolairport.co.uk
Good bet: Bath & North East
Somerset Council is responsible for gambling premises
licences and for publishing a statement of its
principles, which must be reviewed every three
years. The current consultation period runs until
the end of August. You can comment at licensing@bathnes.gov.uk
Full details of the proposed revised statement of
principles is available at: www.bathnes.gov.uk
Extra
time: The Planning and Housing Minister, John
Healey has announced that existing planning permissions
will be able to be extended beyond the current three
year limit which was imposed in 2004. He said:
“This will enable developers to make minor changes to
schemes without having to reapply for planning
permission, saving time and money.”
Beat
the recession: The Council has allocated an
additional £45k for a series of measures to support
local businesses and help local people into
employment. It includes working with GWE Business
West to provide intensive assistance to around 25 local
businesses to help them innovate and survive the
recession, helping local people into retail jobs in Bath
city centre, running a meet the buyer event to provide
local businesses with access to opportunities for
selling goods and services to public sector
organisations and special promotion of Keynsham,
Midsomer Norton and Radstock town centres. Further
information from John Cox on 01225
477294.
Cook off: The Regional
Grand final of the ChefvChef cookery competition will be
held at The City of Bath College on October 22nd when
winners from the 2009 competitions which took place in
Bath, Bristol and Cheltenham will go head to head.
Information from www.Chefvchef.co.uk
Christmas
Market: Plans are being drawn up to extend the
Christmas Market in 2010. There will be further
consultation about the proposed dates – November 25th to
December 12th.
Healthy recruitment
drive: More than 2,000 people have shown
interest in competing for the 150 new jobs which will be
created in the new CircleBath Partnership hospital at
Peasedown St John.
Lost Post:
The Weston Post Office has been closed
temporarily because of the resignation of the
sub-postmaster. It is hoped to re-open it as soon as
possible.
