AGM: This year’s Annual General Meeting will be held on Tuesday May 19th at Wessex Water on Claverton Down starting at 6.00pm. Anyone wanting to attend should contact info@bathchamber.co.uk and also to arrange parking. Theresa McDermott will be standing down as President after serving for four years.

Economic Barometer: References to the economic barometer in the Bath Chronicle have helped attract the interest of BBC 2’s Newsnight Programme and from The Times. They have come to this City because there is some modest evidence of businesses and the general population doing their best in trying circumstances and to offer as confident and optimistic a face as possible. Retail sales from the biggest stores in Bath continue to buck the national trend and they show that during April, on average, they were on a par with last year. In fact during a couple of weeks they were actually slightly ahead of 2008. Business and property enquiries for Bath and North East Somerset are recovering well after a slowdown over the Christmas and New Year period and they are fast approaching the peak figures seen last August.

Parking: Some members have suggested that the temporary structure on Avon Street Car Park should be retained after the new bus station opens. The Council have given the Chamber an assurance that they will explore the financial feasibility of this happening before a final decision to take it down is made.

Bath City Centre Deliveries: Almost 90 businesses responded to the survey of delivery vehicles, which has provided an excellent sample. The returns are now being analysed and the results will be published as soon as they are available.

Major shopping campaign: Property owners in Bath have set up a fund to help promote the retail offering and the Council has also contributed cash. We are hoping to see the first advertisements by the end of this month.

City centre blueprint: Council Cabinet members will be considering public feedback on its Public Realm and Movement Strategy for Bath City Centre at its meeting on the 6th May 2009. Responses to the strategy have been generally positive and support its key principles and recommendations. The Chamber has lobbied in favour of the document and encouraged the delivery of its contents.

Travel Forum: The next meeting of the Bath & NE Somerset Employers' Travel Forum will be held at 14:30 on Wednesday 9th September in the Aix en Provence Room at the Guildhall, Bath. Contact info@bathchamber.co.uk for more information.

Ticket to ride: The Council is proposing a new multi-operator bus ticketing scheme for Bath that will allow bus passengers to use day tickets and season tickets on local bus services, irrespective of bus operator. The scheme is likely to start on 28th September following consultation with operators, representatives of bus users, and the Traffic Commissioner on the details and implementation of the Scheme.
