Hello Donna ,
Bath Chamber news,
information and events for GWE Business West Chambers of
Commerce members.
New
President:
Brigid Musselwhite, the Deputy Chief
Executive of the Royal United Hospital, one of the
area’s largest employers, has been elected as President
of Bath Chamber of Commerce. She succeeded Frank Collins
at the AGM, which was held shortly before the very
successful Annual Dinner at which Olympic Champion,
David Hemery, was the guest speaker. Feedback was very
positive and plans are already underway to hold another
dinner next year. May 18th has been pencilled
in, so make a note in your diary.
Student retention:
All Chamber members are
being encouraged to play their part in helping to
encourage more graduates from our two Universities to
stay to live and work in the area after they finish
their studies. A menu of ways businesses might be able
to help has been developed and can be downloaded here.
Transport:
The Chamber continues to
represent the interests of members in the vital area of
access and connectivity. The Executive Director has
written to the Council about three matters.
First, we have supported the concept of the
establishment of a Freight Consolidation Centre, which
could play a part in reducing the number of lorries
making deliveries in Bath. Dozens of retailers have
already expressed an interest in becoming involved in
this voluntary scheme, which will be free for the first
12 months.
Second, we have expressed the fears of members that
the proposed closure of Pulteney Bridge could lead to
increased congestion on North Parade. The Council has
explained that they wish to go ahead with the closure on
a permanent basis but the signal settings on North
Parade and Pulteney Road have been changed to make
egress easier.
Finally, we have explained our alarm at the proposal
to prevent traffic turning right into Dorchester Street
from Manvers Street. We have pointed out the real danger
that this, combined with the closure of Pulteney Bridge
would make it difficult to access the SouthGate car par
and could result in the A36 becoming regularly jammed
with traffic.
Look East:
As a result of Chamber and
Council activity, an opportunity has arisen to form a
delegation from businesses to attend the Central China
Expo at the end of September. More details from info@bathchamber.co.uk
