Hello Luke ,
Bath Chamber news,
information and events for GWE Business West Chambers of
Commerce members.
Olympics: There
are two chances coming up to learn how best to make the
most of the opportunities presented by the London 2012
Olympic and Paralympic Games at free events, which will
feature guest speaker, Olympic Gold medallist, Jason
Gardener. The first is on Thursday, March
25th at the UWE Exhibition & Conference
Centre, Bristol, BS16 1QY, the second on Tuesday April
20th at the Guildhall in Bath. More details
and registration information from http://rbi.uwe.ac.uk/Internet/business/relays.asp
Parking - Central
and Zone One: The Chamber is continuing to
lobby on behalf of business against proposed changes in
Central and Zone One. We have made the point that
keeping daytime rates in place until 8pm rather than 6pm
will have a damaging effect on the evening economy.
These changes would also include Sundays which would
have a detrimental effect on an important day for
trading as well as for people visiting cultural
attractions or church services. We feel new park
and ride facilities should be in place before any
changes are made. Members can email immediately to
parking@bathnes.gov.uk or
call 01225 395404. Please copy any letters to info@bathchamber.co.uk
Business
Improvement District: Future Bath Plus has agreed
that the first phase of work towards the setting up of a
BID should be carried out, starting very soon and
lasting a couple of months. If all goes well a ballot
will be held in October.
Student retention:
The Chamber is working to help produce a menu of ways in
which business can improve contacts with students during
their time in Bath in the hope that more remain to live
and work in the district after graduation. Any
suggestions please email placements@bathspa.ac.uk
Cash available:
Bath Spa University has secured £80,000 to fund 50
graduate internships. They give businesses a good
opportunity to assess the abilities of individuals and
provides the graduate with valuable experience of a
working environment. More information: placements@bathspa.ac.uk or call
01225 875 403.
Response on vehicle
restriction and freight consolidation: The Chamber
continues to monitor proposals closely. Our position is
that we are broadly in favour of the principle but
remain concerned that proper arrangements must be put in
place in order that disruption to business is
minimised.
Economic Strategy:
The Chamber’s Executive Director spoke in favour of
the new document to the Council Cabinet. The issue now
is for the proposals to be delivered, giving the
district a stronger private sector and increased
knowledge based jobs.
National
award: Milsom Street has been voted Britain’s
best fashion street in Google Street View Awards. More
than 11,000 people voted and Bath’s street came
out on top from a shortlist of twenty chosen by a panel
of experts.
Wind power: The
conclusions of the latest Betterbath meeting which
debated the issue of wind power can be viewed
at www.betterbath.org.uk
Sport Relief 2010:
The Council is encouraging as many people as possible to
sign up for the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile which
takes place in Bath’s Royal Victoria Park on Sunday
March 21. Find out more and pre-register at www.sportrelief.com or email sport
relief.
Donate Don't Dump:
Bath in Fashion is supporting Save the Children, by
seeking high quality clothing and accessories in a
citywide “Donate Don’t Dump” initiative. A set in each
of the Bath in Fashion Catwalk Shows will be styled from
all the items donated. All donations will be collected
in the Octagon off Milsom Street between April
5th and 9th.
