St John Ambulance has praised businesses in Bristol and North East Somerset for their commitment to health and safety after figures revealed that the number of major injuries at work is continuing to fall.
During 2010-11, there were 391 incidents in the area, compared to 434 the previous year, according to the Health and Safety Executive.
This reflects the downward trend in the South West, which has seen the number of non-fatal major injuries among employees drop to 2,120 in 2010-11 from 2,232*.
To help even more organisations improve their safety record, St John Ambulance is offering three places for the price of two on selected health and safety courses until the end of 2012.
Included in the offer are the IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health) working safely and managing safely courses, Health and safety basics and the British Safety Council Level 2 certificate in risk assessment.
The four-day IOSH managing safely course is being held at St John Ambulance’s Aztec West training centre from 19 to 22 June and 11 to 14 September. Using the three for two offer would save businesses £750.
It is for people who are responsible for managing resources and risk in compliance with their organisation's policy and best practice in health and safety.
Delegates will learn safety management, active and reactive monitoring, risk assessment and risk control, reviews and auditing, health and safety legislation and about general and organisation specific hazards.
Assessment is based on project work and a final assessment. Successful candidates receive an IOSH accredited certificate.
David Blackmore, a Health and Safety trainer for St John Ambulance in the South West, said: ‘IOSH managing safely teaches supervisors and managers about the health and safety procedures that they really need to know.
‘This is something that people are often reluctant to learn as they think the need will not arise or they feel bewildered by the detail of the legislation. But it’s usually those very people that get caught off guard.
‘This course includes first class straightforward technical content, based on what delegates need to know in practice, as well as clear scenarios that managers can relate to and which often arise in the work place.’
