Our Priorities

As a result of listening to business leaders and our members’ main concerns, we concentrate on developing policies for six priority areas which themselves pose some complex and controversial questions.

Transport and Connectivity

Transport

What actions need to be taken to improve accessibility, connectivity and congestion?

We are committed to addressing the problems posed by traffic congestion and ageing rail infrastructure which are barriers to economic growth. We are pressing locally and nationally for improved public transport and supporting major schemes including new Park and Ride and Bus Rapid Transit. We also seek investment in world class digital connectivity including superfast broadband and other innovative solutions to improving our connectivity.

Economy and Business Growth

How can investors and entrepreneurs be persuaded to choose the West of England?

We are deeply engaged in ensuring this area remains an attractive place to work, live and do business by encouraging enterprise in all its forms.  In particular we seek to assist our air and sea ports and key sectors such as creative, microelectronics, media, tourism, retail, advanced engineering, environmental technology, financial services and construction.  Quality of life is paramount and we will continue to be involved in the development of an imaginative and wide range of cultural activities and the availability of top class sport and health facilities and safe, attractive open spaces.

Planning and Development

What are our needs for employment and housing growth?

We are convinced that sufficient land must be made available for employment and housing to provide suitable and affordable space for business and the workforce.  With our population forecast to continue to increase a shortage of provision is a barrier to our continued growth. We believe we should be planning for the highest quality of growth in a long term, sustainable and coordinated fashion.

Employment and Skills

How can we capture the full potential of all our communities?                                         We support activities that improve the standards in our local education system and encourage employers to invest in skills and high quality training.  We know that business success is dependent on the availability of ‘work ready’ people.  Our driving ambition is to bring learning, education and skills to those who most need them so that they can achieve their potential and contribute to society.

Energy and Low Carbon Economy

How do we ensure economic growth is aligned with the needs of the environment?

We take long term economic sustainable growth very seriously.  The target of reaching an 80% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2050 is a major challenge for all and a key issue and also opportunity for business.  We will remain at the heart of the debate, asking difficult questions, but also offering creative solutions and inspiring the private, public and voluntary sectors to work together.

Local and National Government

How do we best engage with our politicians and policy makers?

Engagement with governance is a key area of work for us and has very substantial implications for business.  Working with our members and our Policy and Strategy Team we are able to better understand and interpret issues such as Local Enterprise Partnerships, elected mayors, budgets and general and local elections.  We aim to make this more legible to our members.
