It's so easy to get all serious and caught up in our world, but in an age where Trump is president and Love Island beat Blue Planet II in the BAFTA's, it is sometimes best to take a step back to observe and wonder... what on earth is going on?!
It seems that a fair few companies have turned to sarcasm and satire in their advertising campaigns. It’s nice to know that we're not the only ones that are finding comfort in cynical laughter.
Poo Pourri's advert Girls Don't Poop and DollarShaveClub.com's Our Blades are F*cking Great both do a brilliant job at poking fun at themselves and society. See for yourself...
Dissolve do some ultimate self-deprecating in their This is a Generic Brand Video. It's hilarious. If you were to watch the video without audio then it would look like any other brand ad, but the sarcastic voiceover makes it quite the opposite. We are always told, honesty is the best policy, and it seems especially so in this video.
Now here's a good case study. Lifefaker.com. A website from which you can download photographs to post on your social media accounts to boost your confidence and self-esteem. Wow. This website is amazing and ridiculous but also terrifying until you realise that it isn't real. Phew. Lifefaker.com is a campaign by Sanctus to support mental health issues linked to the pressures caused by social media. Its campaign is ingenious. It highlights how ludicrous social media can be, taking away some of the seriousness. Everyone feels better when things are more light-hearted.
So, I think we can conclude that great campaigns can be achieved if we all just chill out a bit. The best stories that you tell around a dinner table are the ones that you laugh at, right? Even when something bad happens, in time it usually becomes a laughable story rather than a sad one. Let's laugh, make funny videos and stop taking ourselves so seriously.
