When it comes to education much attention is rightly given to the cutting edge work that goes on in our two fine Universities, but a lot of vital work also goes on slightly under the radar at Bath College, which provides a wide range of training for jobs in our economy.

The whole institution, from top to bottom, is geared up to listen to the needs of local businesses and they are willing to think innovatively about new ways of engaging.

For example, back in 2006 the Chamber and Initiative, Catering Services International and the College talked about doing something to celebrate the cooking talent operating in our restaurants, hotels and bars and to inspire students to achieve the highest standards. We came up with Chef v Chef, a competition to find the very best.

Since then prizewinners have gone on to become Head Chefs in a wide variety of establishments after taking part in the competition and having a chance to meet and be judged by some of the most admired chefs in the country. There’s no doubt that the competition has played a part in improving quality which has in turn brought a real benefit to the local economy.

There’s still time for people to enter this year’s competition, which will be held on February 15th. All the details are available at www.chefvchef.co.uk.

Another thing the College does is to run an Apprenticeship and Jobs Fair, this year on March 27th in the Assembly Rooms. It’s a great chance for businesses and young people to get together. Last year more than 80 businesses met a thousand students, several employers recruited directly from the event whilst the young people got a valuable insight into the variety of apprenticeships available.

Apprenticeships are relevant to virtually every business and the College is able to help simplify the process. It’s a chance not only to help a young person train on the job, but an opportunity for them to learn about the culture and ethos of the business so that when they are fully trained they can become a valuable employee for years to come.

Whatever your recruitment needs are do remember that Bath College is a truly flexible provider of training and education and when it comes to local business their doors are always open.
