Responding to the violence in Bristol city centre last night Richard Bonner, President of Bristol Chamber & Initiative comments on behalf of the business community:

“We strongly condemn the violence that took place in Bristol city centre yesterday.

“We stand with our local politicians and city partners in calling for calm and encourage all our communities to reject violence, and follow the clear guidance given by the police for lawful and safe protest.

“Our thoughts go out to all the police officers injured and we wish them a speedy recovery to full health. We offer our full support to Avon and Somerset Police Force. Over the past 12 months again and again the Force has had to put themselves in positions of risk and have demonstrated commendable restraint and leadership in dealing with various incidents.

“The self-defeating actions of a group of protestors is a major concern for the business community, many of whom are still reeling from the impacts of Covid-19, and we are concerned as to the impact both for local people in the city and that a negative message goes out far and wide to those planning to visit or invest in this city.

“We are all still fighting a worldwide pandemic and once again strongly encourage everyone to follow the police and public health guidance and rules.

“The last year has challenged us all in different ways and it’s been inspiring to see how the business community alongside others has come together to support the city at this time.

“Yesterday’s actions set back so much of this work across the city to bring support and positive futures for all residents. It frustrates us because this is not the Bristol we know and experience every day.”
