A communications security company, born out of quantum technology developed at the University of Bristol, has been awarded one of eight places in the new UK-Canada Quantum Technologies Competition.

KETS was jointly selected by Innovate UK and the National Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). The competition represents the first industry-led partnership between any two countries to develop quantum technologies, which exploit our understanding of light and matter at the atomic level.

It’s a technology that shouldn’t be underestimated. Last year, Google announced that its latest quantum computer had “performed a test computation in just 200 seconds that would have taken the best known algorithms in the most powerful supercomputers thousands of years to accomplish.”

KETS’ project, “Building a standardised quantum-safe networking architecture”, brings together experts from both sides of the Atlantic across academia, industry, and government. The end goal is to provide a common quantum-safe network standard for business and governments, which they can use to build higher-level applications on top of, such as websites and e-commerce platforms.

The eight winning projects will share grants of £2 million from UKRI and C$4.4 million total investments from Canada under the bilateral initiative.

Enterprise Europe Network, funded by Innovate UK and delivered by Business West, has supported KETS since 2018, delivering support on leadership, investment, sales and marketing, internationalisation, IP and more.

Advisor, Natalie Collard, initially identified the UK-Canada competition and suggested that KETS apply. She will continue to offer bespoke support as the company grows through this new opportunity.
