Business West responds to UK’s Free Trade deal with Japan

11th September 2020

The UK has today finalised its trade deal with Japan, having signed an agreement which aims to boost trade by about £15bn.

Commenting on the announcement, which according to International Trade Secretary Liz Truss will see 99% of exports from the UK to Japan becoming tariff free, Business West’s Director of Commercial Services James Monk said,

“Businesses in the South West and across the UK will welcome the free trade partnership that has been agreed today between the UK and Japan.

“The new trade relationship forged between the two countries will see businesses gaining access to a major market, a welcome milestone in an uncertain economic time.

“Business West will work with the government to ensure companies in our region are supported to reap the benefits of this new deal and that advice is provided to enable businesses big and small to thrive and grow to benefit their communities.

“Whilst this agreement is a huge win for the UK government, companies and consumers, securing a Free Trade Agreement with the EU remains critical to the future of businesses in the UK. We urge Ministers to redouble their efforts to reach a comprehensive partnership with our largest trading partner at a crucial time in the negotiations.”
