Chamber round up: Bristol December 2018

11th December 2018

I’m pleased to say it's been a great year for the Business West Chamber of Commerce and our network continues to grow.

I have a number of updates to share.

We had a super evening celebrating the 30 year anniversary of the West of England Initiative and all the achievements made. Read more.

The Severn Tolls will be lifted on 17th December. This is a move that we have cautiously welcomed given that it will lift a psychological barrier between the West of England and Wales. However, in terms of the potential impact on congestion and the environment we will be keeping a close eye on how this develops.

The Global Parliament of Mayors back in October was an unmitigated success considering it was the biggest summit to date and gave rise to the first public commitment of international city leaders to uphold the UN’s Global Compact on Migration and Refugees.

Speaking of the UN Global Compact, Burges Salmon kindly hosted an event recently that explored the opportunities that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can offer businesses. Our members are already making strides here and Chamber President, Jaya Charkrabarti has penned a truly inspirational blog piece about this.

We're putting in a response to the latest JSP Consultation and North Somerset Council Local Plan 2036: Issues and Options Stage soon. And our new member, Hargreaves Lansdown is launching Mentoring Awards. This is open to all sectors, Hargreaves Lansdown are keen for the regions to embrace diversity within their businesses and we are working with them on this important agenda.

In addition to our policy team’s advocacy work, which has helped a number of Bristol businesses feature in national media outlets of late, Trading Through Brexit has been launched. This is a service to help businesses keep on trading regardless of the outcome of the Brexit negotiations. Subscribe for regular video updates and content pieces discussing where we are at in terms of a Brexit deal and what this means for business.

Wishing you a very Happy Christmas!
