Gloucestershire is getting its very own version of the international climate summit - COP26 - being hosted by the UK in Glasgow in November.
It’s called Climate Gloucestershire and is being held at the Gloucestershire Science and Technology Park at Berkeley on Thursday 21 October.
I was given a preview of the event last week, and was very impressed by the idea from the government-funded Active Building Centre which is based at Berkeley.
Businesses keen to develop their net zero journey, will I am sure, be attracted to the event which will feature key speakers like Dale Vince, boss of Ecotricity in Stroud.
The Active Building Centre - housed on the science park developed by South Gloucestershire and Stroud College - has its roots in research at Swansea University into sustainable construction for the future.
Government had realised that the construction industry would not be able to achieve the innovation needed on its own.
So, the Active Building Centre was set up and backed by the Swansea University construction research.
The centre’s vision is to transform the UK construction and energy sectors - contributing to more efficient energy use and decarbonisation.
Active Building Centre are already working on a carbon neutral homes project with Nationwide in Swindon.
Chris Brierley, business development manager at the Active Building Centre, told me:
“The COP26 climate change summit will be a landmark moment this November, but the conversation cannot start and end there.
“So, before world leaders descend on Glasgow, we will be holding our own summit called Climate Gloucestershire.
“Already, it’s been dubbed COP26 Gloucestershire and the name might just stick.
“We will be discussing the issues set to dictate whether the UK succeeds or fails in meeting its net-zero goals”.
There will be breakout debates at the event which include: construction firms must change or they will die; from leaky homes to draught proof and secure; the new workforce of tomorrow.
Climate Gloucestershire is being held all day on 21 October at the science and technology park’s John Huggett building.
