The Rise of Green Careers: A Growing Landscape of Opportunity
Written by Chloe Barratt

Green jobs are expanding rapidly, contributing £74 billion to the UK’s economy last year alone.  With an estimated 700,000 new green jobs expected to emerge across the UK in the next decade  - and 140,000 green jobs anticipated in the South West by 2050, primarily in energy, housing retrofit, and green infrastructure – the sector is only set to grow.

Thinking About a Green Career? Here’s How to Get Started:
If you want to transition to a green role, there’s never been a better time. Here are five practical steps to get started:

1. Explore Green Career Pathways
The green sector is full of diverse roles that are continuously emerging as we work towards net zero. Start by reflecting on your skills and passions, and explore resources like Green Jobs for Nature, Green Careers Hub, Careerpilot, and the National Careers Service, which provide useful insights into different job profiles.

2. Training and Funding
An estimated 220,000 roles will require upskilling to meet net-zero commitments in the South West alone.  Consider how you might enhance your expertise or acquire green skills through training at local colleges, universities and independent training providers.

Many universities also offer online courses such as MOOCs , which are free courses covering a range of topics and without any entry requirements, meaning anyone can register and learn from them. Your local council may also have green training opportunities on its website, including fully-funded training through skills bootcamps

3. Stay Open-Minded
Green careers aren’t limited to technical specialists, stay open-minded and consider the many roles that support sustainable outcomes. Look for companies or industries that interest you and the types of jobs available, you might find green roles in unexpected areas!

4. Look for Green Opportunities in Your Current Role
You don’t necessarily need a new job title to contribute to green initiatives, here are ways you can incorporate green initiatives into your current role:

  • Procurement and Materials: Consider shifting to suppliers with strong environmental credentials or sourcing eco-friendly materials.
  • Marketing and Communications: Use your platform to raise awareness about sustainability and green initiatives.
  • Office Practices: Implement green initiatives like waste reduction or energy-saving measures within your department.
  • Sustainable Event Planning: Consider opting for local seasonal catering, with minimal disposable materials. Encourage carpooling or public transport incentives to reduce travel emissions.
  • Form a Green Team: Start a sustainability-focused team within your organisation to share best practices and trial environmentally friendly initiatives.
  • Promote Diversity and Inclusion in Green Efforts: Ensure green initiatives are inclusive and accessible to all employees by ensuring a diverse range of perspectives.

5. Networking and Mentoring
Connecting with others in the green sector can be incredibly valuable. Attend sustainability events, join green networking groups, and connect with professionals within the industries you’re interested in. Even a quick call with a professional in the field can provide perspective and inspiration.

Final thoughts
Transitioning to a green career offers a meaningful way to contribute to a sustainable future while making the most of an expanding field with diverse opportunities. Whether you're new to the green sector or exploring ways to make your current role more sustainable, there is an abundance of resources and training options to support your journey. By embracing skills development, exploring the range of green pathways, and networking within the sector you can work towards a career that contributes to a sustainable, thriving economy.
