The Somerset Innovation Network (SI-Net) aims to drive growth and innovation in the region whilst fostering meaningful collaboration between forward-thinking organisations.
Jane Purdy, Head of Enterprise at Business West, heads up the delivery of the SI-Net project in Somerset and Dorset. We caught up with her to hear more about her role and how SI-Net is helping local businesses access support and opportunities for collaboration.
Q: Tell us a bit about yourself and your career background?
A: I have had a varied career, ranging from investment management and banking software engineering to serving as a program manager for NVQ Level 3 Business Start-up. I also ran my own business for 14 years running three retail premises in the jewellery and creative industry, where I taught jewellery-making and sold components. This diverse background has equipped me with a wide variety of skills that I’ve used to support businesses in their development and growth.
I joined Business West six years ago as a Business Advisor and was promoted to Head of Enterprise within two years. I am passionate about helping businesses succeed through mentoring and sharing my experiences.
Q: What is your current role at Business West?
A: I am currently the Head of Enterprise, which includes project management of various public sector contracts across a variety of sectors, including aerospace, advanced engineering, digital, retail, and social enterprises. My role involves designing and creating projects that meet the needs of our funders, as well as overseeing the complete project management.
Q: What does a typical workday involve?
A: My typical workday is quite dynamic and involves a wide range of responsibilities. A significant part of my role involves liaising with key stakeholders, including representatives from the local council, innovation centres, and various business partners. This communication is crucial for ensuring that the project aligns with the needs of local business.
I work on developing and refining strategies that can help local businesses access the resources and support they need to innovate and grow. My focus is always on driving the success of our initiatives and fostering collaboration across the region.
Q: What can businesses get out of joining the Somerset Innovation Network?
A: SI-Net, funded by Somerset Council, offers unparalleled aerospace and advanced engineering solutions that propels businesses towards success through the expertise of the West of England Aerospace Forum (WEAF). Businesses can access cutting-edge technology that supports the "factory of the future" at the iAero Centre in Yeovil. This includes virtual reality (VR), additive layer manufacturing, embedded sensors, and robotic solutions, along with guidance on how to enter the supply chain of major industry players.
The Firepool Centre for Digital Innovation in Taunton provides a collaborative space for businesses to attend events and network, bringing all stakeholders together with a shared vision of economic prosperity. SI-Net fosters an ecosystem in the Somerset area, connecting colleges and delivery partners to cultivate continuous improvement and progress. Additionally, businesses can access comprehensive support services, including strategic net-zero planning to facilitate growth and sustainability. We also help businesses become grant-ready and develop forward-thinking strategies.
Q: What type of businesses do you work with?
A: Businesses in the aerospace and advanced engineering sectors based in Somerset or Dorset, as well as digital technology companies or those using technology in innovative ways to transform their operations. These businesses are typically small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with fewer than 250 employees and a turnover of less than £43 million.
Q: What have been the highlights of the project so far for you?
A: One of the biggest highlights for me has been seeing the network develop and witnessing businesses make meaningful connections, which has generated significant interest in the project.
Q: Overall, what is the most rewarding aspect of your role?
A: The most rewarding aspect of my role is seeing businesses succeed.
Q: What do you like to do away from work?
A: Outside of work I really enjoy spending time outdoors, especially by the sea. I also have a passion for creativity, and crafts like crochet, papercraft, painting, jewellery-making, and sewing. I consider myself a serial crafter in my spare time, which is a nice contrast to my day job.
