Training apprentices is not just about recruiting staff to the business or giving an opportunity to young people. Investing in your workforce via apprentices helps retain talent, provides key succession planning and builds business productivity for years to come.

But why would the right apprentice choose your business?

We want to make sure there is no of loss of interest, or confusion about what the job was going to be or what it can progress into.

We know that apprenticeships are designed by employers and offer the best and current 'on the job learning' and supports career pathways. This is perfect if you have attracted an apprentice that is really enthused by the role and the sector it fits into. So how can employers help find that apprentice who will thrive and have such a positive on the organisation?

We want to examine an ‘Employee’s Value Proposition’ (EVP) in relation to hiring apprentices.

EVP or in this case AVP can be the most important part of the apprentice recruitment process. It can tell the right candidate why they should apply for a job in a particular business and what’s in it for them. Using this approach it’s more likely to get the right apprentice you need for your business and will ultimately provide higher productivity and retention rates.

How does this work?

Tell your story, how you started, what inspired you and what successes you’ve had! Will your candidates associate with your values, your brand, and your vison? Will they be inspired to add value to your story, is there scope for input and initiative!

What makes your business stand out to applicants, the benefits , the support, the future!

Advertise differently, looking at where your target apprentices look for employment or link into sector interest groups.  Have they had valuable work experience? More importantly, have you offered work experience that can truly be used as a shop window recruitment arm for your business? Can you develop links with schools and colleges to identify with students who have those vocational interests in the sector your business operates?

These are all searching questions and actions which once looking inward at your strengths, you can provide a much stronger outward recruitment and retention rate.

Become an employer of choice and have a competitive advantage over competitors in finding the best talent who are motivated and committed.

Delivered as part of the Workforce for the Future programme the skills team at Business West are offering a free workshop to dig deeper into this approach.
