Looking back at our successes in 2017 and the challenges that lie ahead

19th December 2017

Many thanks to those who were able to join us on Thursday for our final Initiative Evening of 2017, which provided an opportunity to reflect on the year gone by in the West of England and to look ahead to 2018, in the wonderfully festive surroundings of Leigh Court.

Our president Richard Bonner and I were pleased to offer some personal reflections on the past 12 months, before members were shown a short film drawing together the insights of various partners on our achievements in 2017, and the challenges and opportunities which lie ahead.

Whether around regeneration, infrastructure investment and Brexit, culture, sport and inclusivity, we were reminded of what a busy year it’s been, the influence we’re having, and the work that is still to be done.

To close the session, I was pleased to be joined by panellists Andrew Kelly, Kalpna Woolf and John Hirst for a Q&A discussion, looking ahead to 2018. It’s clear to me that while there are certainly challenges for the city region, there are many reasons to be confident about the future.

Congregating afterwards in the Great Hall, I was pleased to see members joining in with a carol or two in good spirit before the conversation continued over a festive supper.

2018 will of course be another busy year, not least as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Bristol Cultural Development Partnership and the 30th anniversary of the Initiative. I very much look forward to continuing our work with you and wish you a very happy festive break.
