Bristol Chamber of Commerce Round Up - June

27th June 2018

Recently Business West Chambers of Commerce were delighted to win the 2018 Innovator of the Year award at the South West’s biggest business awards.

This recognises the work of our International Trade Centre team in inspiring and helping companies to investigate exporting, or to grow their international sales. Now employing over 100 advisers and experts, our International Trade Centre is a ‘one-stop export shop’ for Bristol and the South West, pulling together the practical and strategic support business and new enterprises need.

Last week Airbus have made clear publically the significant risk to their UK business from the current position of Brexit. This is a major concern and could have a significant impact on the future economic health of Bristol and the South West. We continue to work closely with our business community to listen to them, help them prepare for Brexit, and express their views including through our local business survey, round table events, most recently with Rt Hon Dr Liam Fox, MP & Secretary of State for International Trade and various other one to one meetings.

We are partners in the City Office led by Mayor of Bristol, Marvin Rees which is focused on key social and city issues including No Child Goes Hungry and street homelessness and action coming forward includes the establishment of a new city fund. This will be formally launched at our Business West  Initiative meeting in September.

St Paul’s Carnival on Sat 8th July is back! 2018 is a big year with this important event celebrating its 50th year. Crossing generations and celebrating Afro-Caribbean culture and the diversity of our city is something we at Business West Chambers of Commerce are proud to actively support.

We’re running a Behind the Scenes Tour of the Bristol Port Company on 10th July which is an exclusive members event. The Bristol Port Company, comprising Avonmouth and Royal Portbury Docks, is one of the world’s most productive and technically advanced ports and a vital piece of infrastructure and an international gateway for Bristol and the West of the UK. You will have the chance to see and hear about some of the secrets of their success. Please come along to what will be a fascinating event but book your tickets soon as places are limited!

Bristol’s International Balloon Fiesta takes place from 9 to 12th August and this year marks its 40th anniversary. Did you know that initially this event was originally set up by the Bristol Junior Chamber? Business West will be hosting the BIBF’s annual business breakfast for the fifth year running alongside Chamber members, Bristol Energy & Thrings. This special event will bring together members of the local business community to enjoy the mass ascent followed by discussion of a hot topic affecting the city.

There are a range of opportunities for business to collaboratively bid into central government place & industry driven investment, through the UK Industrial Strategy. This includes projects such as 5G, and focused around areas such as Future Mobility, Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality and Social Care and Clean Growth.
