Business West has embarked on an Digital Carnet pilot project with a small number of other Chambers of Commerce.

The digitisation of the ATA Carnet system (also known as ‘Digital Carnets’) will be good news to temporary exporters - as it will simplify and expedite the Carnet process.

UKNATACO (the UK National ATA Carnet Organisation) is managing the pilot e-ATA Carnet scheme, and while it runs, both paper-based and digital Carnets will need to be presented to Customs. Digital Carnets on their own will not be a legally accepted tool for temporary admission until 2024.

What are the benefits of Digital Carnets?

  • Digital Carnets save paper, ink, printing and energy costs
  • Digital Carnets save time and simplify the administrative side of ATA Carnets
  • Digital Carnets reduce the likelihood of errors
  • Digital Carnets reduce the likelihood of financial penalties from overseas customs

What is next for temporary exporters who want to use Digital Carnets?

The digitisation of the ATA Carnet system is set to alleviate a lot of the administrative burden currently associated with ATA Carnets. Temporary exporters will no longer need to factor in time for Carnet printing and postage, as e-ATA Carnets will be immediately accessible for use and validation via the ATA Carnet app.

Exporters will no longer need to worry about losing their Carnet (which isn’t an uncommon occurrence unfortunately!), as the Carnet will always be available on the centralised ATA Carnet system.

While the pilot is in progress, Business West is currently only testing e-ATA Carnets with a few customers, with a view that in 2024 we will be able to roll out the digital Carnet system to everyone. We will provide updates about the scheme on our blog – so make sure to check back and keep up to date with all Carnet-related news! Enquire about Digital Carnets.

Overall, the digitisation of ATA Carnets is an extremely positive step – and something that temporary exporters will be looking forward to. Business West is excited to be bringing Digital Carnets to our customers as soon as possible.
