Green business is a huge opportunity for Gloucestershire

Full marks for Cotswold District Council to put a marker down that they wish to become the greenest council in the country.

Their timing couldn’t be better for local businesses as the government signals its ten-point plan for a green industrial revolution.

And, of course, the government will be hosting the COP-26 climate change conference in Glasgow later in the year.

Against this backdrop, I welcome Cotswold District Council’s Green Economic Growth Strategy and the enthusiastic words in the report by Councillor Tony Dale, Cabinet member for Economy and Skills.

“We want to help our businesses become green, save money on energy bills and engage with a new digital and online revolution, so that they create fabulous customer experiences in the Cotswolds and around the world.”

Spot on with that vision Tony.

That is why on January 25, Business West and the council are holding a virtual Business & Economy webinar (10-11.30am) titled 'The Green Agenda'.

It’s free and you can book your place now by going to: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/business-economy-meeting-with-cotswold-di...

I will be chairing the meeting, and the speakers will include Councillor Dale, James Milner, Managing Director of Wild Carrot at Chavenage and Michael Howell, Director Catch Energy in Cirencester.

I hope our webinar will help companies to discover more about the opportunities to grow green business in the Cotswolds.

In our Local Industrial Strategy, developed before we were hit by COVID, GFirstLEP recognised the importance of backing the Green business sector to the hilt.

My personal belief is that our young people are equally as enthusiastic as the council about developing green business. I think it will give them great employment opportunities post-COVID.

Every company in Gloucestershire - large and small - is now faced with the challenge of addressing the climate crisis.

Here at Business West we are carbon neutral and we aim to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2030.

On Saturday, the Financial Times reported that Europe had its hottest year recorded in 2020, while globally the year tied with 2016 as the warmest on record-a signal of the increasing impact of climate change on the planet.

Business can no longer afford to ignore it.
