Affordability checks within the gambling industry and its knock on impacts onto horse racing were raised on a recent Initiative in B&NES members call with Wera Hobhouse, the MP for Bath, by Simon Tonge, Executive Director at Bath Racecourse.

It was part of a regular series of meetings with the district’s two MPs which gives members a chance to raise issues of concern.

During the meeting Mrs Hobhouse agreed to speak in a Parliamentary debate on Financial Risk Checks for Gambling, during which she praised the racecourse for playing an integral role in the city, bringing thousands of visitors to the city and fostering a vibrant horse racing scene.

She expressed concerns that racing would be vulnerable to proposed changes to gambling regulations. During the Westminster Hall e-petition debate on Financial Risk Checks for Gambling, many MPs discussed proposed affordability checks for those engaging in gambling. While she joined their calls for better regulations to prevent harm and addiction, she emphasised the importance of ensuring that gambling legislation protects the fun of harmless, casual betting.

Mrs Hobhouse's involvement within the debate was born out of having the platform for Initiative Member's to discuss issues with local MP's that is part of the membership. Bath Racecourse would like to place on record its gratitude for having this platform which has been used for the racecourse and its views to be represented in Parliamentary debate and shape policy.
