An inspiring range of local heroes are being celebrated in a new campaign to encourage more people to take positive action to help tackle poverty, inequality and climate change.

A series of 17 short videos, one for each of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (Global Goals), are being released from Tuesday 6th July. Each one highlights a Bristol hero - from across the city and many walks of life – who is doing something inspiring to help reach that Goal. Each hero was nominated by a community group in Bristol, responding to global goals at a local level.

The videos will be released one per week across social media platforms and on the new Global Goals Centre website (of which Business West is a partner) as a countdown to the major climate conference, COP-26, being held in Glasgow (1st-12th November). The aim is to engage a wider audience with the climate and inequality agendas and show the relevance of these issues to our city and our daily lives.

Nick Ballard, co-founder of ACORN, is the hero for our first Goal - No Poverty - and was nominated by Eastside Community Trust. Stacy Yelland from the Trust explained why he was nominated: “ACORN’s campaigns tackle both the causes and effects of poverty. Nick has grown ACORN into a national force to be reckoned with, championing issues that make a real difference. He is a real local hero”.

The Global Goals Centre, a Bristol-based education charity using creative ways to inspire a fairer, greener future, has worked in partnership with 17 local community organisations, Bristol 24/7 and creative agency Tusko, to create the Bristol 17 campaign, supported by the Bristol City Council Climate Hub.

The #Bristol17 campaign will include many easy and affordable ways to get involved in local projects that make a real difference locally and globally. All our heroes agreed that it is by people working together that we will bring an end to poverty, inequality and climate change. In the words of Peninah Achieng-Kindberg, our hero for Goal 10 Reduced Inequalities, nominated by African Voices Forum "Everyone needs to take action in whatever way they can".
