Severn Bridge Toll roundtable with Secretary of State for Wales comment

21st July 2017

Following a roundtable discussion with Secretary of State for Wales, Alun Cairns, to discuss the business impact of the scrapping the Severn Bridge Toll Business West Managing Director Phil Smith commented:

“I am pleased to see that the Secretary of State has gone further than the price cut originally promised by the Chancellor in March 2016 and has decided to scrap the Severn Bridge Toll altogether.

“Sitting around the table with representatives of business bodies and transport groups on both sides of the Severn it was clear that the Secretary of State’s plans were positively received.

“In scrapping the Severn Bridge Toll a psychological barrier has been lifted bringing the businesses and communities of South Wales and South West England much closer together.

“More broadly, it is encouraging to see that the government has been proactive in engaging with business communities in both our neighbouring regions to begin to solve one of our many transportation infrastructure issues, particularly in light of the uncertainty surrounding railroad electrification.”
