In today's fast-paced global economy, international trade plays a pivotal role in the growth and success of companies. However, navigating the complexities of cross-border trade can be cumbersome and time-consuming, often involving excessive paperwork and manual processes. To streamline and enhance the efficiency of international trade operations, the UK has taken a significant step forward with the implementation of the Electronic Trade Documents Act.

Summary of the Electronic Trade Documents Act:

  • The new legislation comes into effect on 20th September 2023.
  • Electronic trade documents are to be granted the same legal status as physical trade documents, making trade more efficient, cleaner and cheaper for firms.
  • The Act also covers trade documents such as promissory notes, warehouse receipts, marine insurance policies, and cargo insurance certificates.
  • The UK economy is set to see over £1 billion boost over the next decade, with UK businesses enjoying huge cost savings.
  • The Act will digitalise trade across the world.

James Monk, Commercial Director at Business West said:

“Business West welcomes the Electronic Trade Documents Act as it marks a transformative milestone in the world of international trade. By embracing electronic trade documents, companies can unlock unprecedented efficiencies, cost savings, and enhanced security while contributing to a more sustainable way of business.

“Business West is actively involved in the digitisation of trade processes, through two innovative digital initiatives; e-ATA Carnets and Genesis project.

“E-ATA Carnets will simplify and expedite the administrative burden associated with ATA Carnets and save temporary exporters valuable time and resources. Digitisation reduces the likelihood of errors and ensures greater accuracy, which in turn reduces the likelihood of financial penalties from overseas Customs. E-ATA Carnets will also be much quicker to use. We are currently working with some of our customers to test how they will work in practice.

Genesis project is being rolled out to Chambers of Commerce around the globe and will help businesses verify preferential origin statements on invoice declarations. Using Genesis, which is a digital verification solution, reassures both manufacturers and buyers of compliance and builds upon the global reputation of Chambers of Commerce as independent third parties. It will reduce both the risks of human error and fraud. As our Government agrees to more free trade agreements, this platform will provide clarity and certainty for the global supply chains.”

Business West is committed to driving progress in the digitisation of international trade and enabling our customers to thrive in the rapidly evolving digital landscape. For more information about e-ATA Carnets and Genesis, please contact our international trade team.
