Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs) are rapidly becoming one of the most popular employee benefits for companies of all sizes.

So why the recent explosion of interest?

Over the last couple of years, there has been a surge in publicity surrounding mental health in the workplace. As a result, HR teams are enhancing their health and wellbeing strategies. They understand the pivotal role that an EAP plays in the maintenance of their employees’ mental health. A workforce with good mental health is likely to be happier and more productive, so it’s a win-win situation for both employees and employers.

So, what is an EAP and how does it help employees?

An EAP comprises a 24/7 helpline, allowing employees (and often immediate family members) access to professional support, advice, practical information and counselling, on a wide range of personal and work-related issues. A good EAP will also include a number of local face-to-face counselling sessions, as part of the package.

Employees contact EAP helplines to discuss many issues, including: -

  •         Managing Stress/Depression
  •         Divorce / Partnership Breakdown
  •         Coping with Bereavement
  •         Advice on Drug / Alcohol Misuse
  •         Redundancy
  •         Bullying at Work
  •         Financial Concerns / Planning

Why do companies purchase EAPs?

  • An EAP is low-cost benefit which is highly-valued by staff
  • It will help a company attract and retain staff
  • It will help an employer meet its duty of care obligations
  • It is likely to give a very positive Return on Investment (ROI).

I believe the popularity of Employee Assistance Programmes will continue to increase in the medium to long term, due to the many benefits they give to both employees and employers.
