 RWA Sponsorship Proposal

John Hoyland:These Mad Little Hybrids

2 February –12 May 2024

John Hoyland (1934-2011) is widely acknowledged as one of the most dynamic and inventive British painters of the post-war period.  Hoyland’sart constantly evolved, and the full diversity of his later work has not yet been fully understood, in all its strangeness and wonder.

This exhibition is organised around a group of ceramic sculptures, made in 1994. Only previously shown in the year they were made; anarchic, funny, Hoyland himself confessed he did not know what to make of the group, calling them ‘these mad little hybrids’.

Hoyland’s ceramics will be placed alongside contemporary sculptures selected by curator and sculptor Olivia Bax. These include works by Caroline Achaintre, Phyllida Barlow, Nick Cave, Andrew Sabin and othersin the RWA’s main galleries. In the adjoining side galleries will be a display of works by Hoyland, primarily paintings, as well as polaroid photography, taken to remind him of inspirational colours, forms and textures spotted while travelling or his studio experiments.

A coffee table exhibition book, including the sponsor’s logo, exploring the theme of hybridity in contemporary sculpture will be published by Slimvolume in 2024.
