Believe it or not, some of the world’s biggest businesses started from the very bottom before working their way up to being some of the most recognised corporations of today.

As a small start-up you might find yourself under a lot of pressure to compete with the big dogs, but all it really takes is hard work, investment and a whole lot of dedication to take your business from local start-up to a potentially multinational brand.

You might be surprised to find out how some of the most well known brands began; for example did you know:

  •  Samsung’s initial offering in 1938 was exporting dried fish, fruit and vegetables to China
  • Tesco began in 1919 when Jack Cohen opened a market stall in the East End of London and made a £1 profit from sales of £4
  • In 1965, Amstrad began with a 17 year old Alan Sugar selling reconditioned TV’s from his house in Hackney, London

The government backed Start Up Loans Company has produced an interactive timeline featuring some of the worlds biggest brands, and shares some little known facts that shaped the businesses we know today from over the past 100 years.

Take a look at some of the key turning points here.
