On Thursday 14th March we invited Bristol Initiative members to meet their representatives in the Bristol Labour Party at the offices of fellow Initiative members Arcadis. As with the previous event in the “Meet the Parties” series, the Meet The Greens Business Breakfast, the Labour team started off the day with a short presentation to our members, and then took questions from the audience.

A variety of members attended from across multiple sectors, ensuring a varied and engaging discussion. Our speakers were:

  • Tom Renhard, Leader of the Bristol Labour Party, Councillor for Horfield & Cabinet Member for Housing Delivery & Homelessness
  • Don Alexander, Councillor for Avonmouth and Lawrence Weston & Cabinet Member for Transport
  • Ellie King, Councillor for Hillfields & Cabinet Member for Public Health and Communities
  • Kye Dudd, Councillor for Southmead & Cabinet Member for Housing Services and Energy the Bristol Labour Party

Throughout our event there was an emphasis on community engagement and leadership, as speakers underscored the significance of constructive dialogue and partnership between local government and businesses. Tom Renhard set the tone by highlighting the importance of inclusive governance and community-driven initiatives in driving Bristol's progress. Don Alexander and Ellie King echoed these sentiments, emphasising their roles within the Labour party and city administration, and their commitment to fostering meaningful engagement with stakeholders across Bristol's diverse communities.

Urban development also emerged as a central theme of discussion, with our speakers reflecting on Bristol's remarkable transformation in recent history. When asked in the Q&A “Could you please share the progress and transformation of Bristol over the past eight years?” Councillor Tom Renhard said “Over the past eight years, Bristol has undergone significant changes. Cranes now dot the skyline, new buildings are rising, and overall, the city has improved. While perhaps not as rapid as we’d like, it’s been a vast improvement. Our vision is for Bristol to continue growing and evolving.”

The pressing issues of housing and environment also took centre stage, as speakers addressed the challenges of housing delivery, homelessness, and climate crises facing Bristol. The councillors reaffirmed their commitment to tackling these issues head-on, outlining comprehensive strategies aimed at promoting affordable housing, combating homelessness, and safeguarding Bristol's natural environment for future generations.

After the presentations, attendees were invited to ask questions, and the ensuing dialogue was both very constructive for both the present Initiative members and the Labour Party, underscoring the shared commitment of political leaders and the business community to working collaboratively towards a brighter, more prosperous future for Bristol.
