At a time when employment land for business is at a premium, it is heartening to see South Gloucestershire and Stroud College (SGS) trying to help in a visionary way.

They are inviting companies to an event at the end of this month with Business West and the Bloodhound world land speed record team to encourage business to move to the Gloucestershire Science and Technology Park at Berkeley Green.

It is here that there are already 14 companies operating alongside the SGS College students studying STEM subjects and the Bloodhound jet car team.

To me, that seems a marriage so very worthwhile.

It is visionary and practical.

Andy Slaney is in charge of the Berkeley project, and he told me:

“Our vision here is to offer both business and college/school age children a bridge between education and the technological world of work.

“Our young people go through their education and they can interact with businesses on the park.

“The businesses can also lean into those young people and hopefully get some useful input.”

One of those companies is Green Fuels Research, started in a home garage and now exporting their services globally.

The journey of the Bloodhound world land speed car will be told at the evening on Thursday February 27 between 6-8pm.

Rick Sturge of the Bloodhound team said:

“Apart from us being on course to break the world land speed record, being based here at SGS has created great STEM enrichment by connecting us with education and industry.

“Bloodhound was conceived, designed and built in the West Country. We are still West Country based with a lot of our suppliers here.”

Key members of the project will be showing off the jet car and showing film of the South Africa desert speed trials on the evening.

Rick added: “This is a great success story even as far as we have got - we know we can break the world land speed record.”

Interest will be high for the event and companies need to apply through Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/bloodhound-lsr-sgs-commercial-services-bu...
