The BCC is urging Government to help business boom as it considers its future spending plans.
The Bristol Initiative is more than just a network - it’s a community of over 140 business leaders dedicated to shaping a better future for the West of England. From driving sustainable growth to tackling deprivation and improving transport, education, and skills, the Initiative is at the heart of positive change in our region. But who are the people behind this work?
We were pleased to welcome attendees to our second Mindful Employer Network event this week - a collaboration between Swindon Borough Council, Business West, and Swindon & Gloucestershire Mind. As we celebrate Pride Month this June, the focus on supporting LGBTQ+ employees and championing inclusivity in the workplace was particularly timely.
Expanding into a new international market can be exciting, but it often comes with a fair bit of financial uncertainty. If you’re an exporter, getting paid on time (or at all) is non-negotiable. You’ve shipped the goods, followed the contract, and now the final step – payment – needs to happen smoothly. But what if your buyer is unfamiliar, the market is considered risky, or you've been stung before by late or missing payments? This is where a Letter of Credit (LC) can be a useful tool to consider. Letters of Credit have been a trusted document in international trade for decades, and for good reason. They offer exporters a level of protection and certainty, particularly when trust is still being built or cash flow needs to be predictable. Yet many businesses may not be aware of them or don’t realise just how versatile and accessible they can be.
Responding to confirmation that new US tariffs on steel and aluminium should not affect UK exports, William Bain, the BCC’s Head of Trade Policy, said: “UK firms exporting steel or aluminium goods to the US will be relieved that tariffs will not double today. They now at least have clarity that duty rates will remain the same until 9 July. “By it is critical that the US and UK governments deliver on the commitments made in the Economic Prosperity Deal (EPD) to ensure long term certainty. That would mean the removal of tariffs on UK exports of steel and aluminium, and for all derivative products like cutlery, cans, nuts and screws to be exempt as well. “With many other nations now facing up to punitive 50% levies, this shows why negotiation was the right response. UK businesses should now be in pole position with one of our two top export markets. “However, the continually shifting sands around tariffs are creating more uncertainty for businesses globally and weighing heavily on growth. The BCC’s latest economic forecast predicts just a 1.1% increase in UK GDP for 2025, and much of this was generated in the trading frenzy before tariffs rose. “So, we must not stop here. We want to see implementation of the EPD just as quickly on cars and automotive parts. Firms across many other goods sectors are also still facing a 10% tariff. We must use the foundations of our current agreement to deliver tariff relief to all parts of the economy.”
Date: Wednesday 2nd July 2025 Time: 10:00am – 2:30pm (includes a BBQ lunch & garden games) Location: Business West HQ, Leigh Court, Bristol BS8 3RA Global trade is shifting rapidly. Businesses are being challenged to adapt quickly, from the confusion of US tariffs to the negotiation of major new Free Trade Agreements (such as India and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership - CPTPP). And, the recently announced UK-EU Leaders’ Summit deal, while offering opportunities, also adds to the complex landscape. That’s why we’re inviting exporters, freight forwarders, and manufacturers to join us at the Talking Trade & Summer BBQ – a practical, half-day event filled with trade updates, expert insight, and real-life stories from fellow exporters. The event will cover: What recent trade developments mean for your business How to make the most of FTAs and avoid common mistakes Tips on navigating customs, documentation and rules of origin The growing role of digitisation and AI in trade We’ll be joined by expert speakers from the Department for Business and Trade, Gaston Schul, Business West, and several exporting businesses, who will share their experiences during our Q&A panel. After the sessions, join us for a BBQ lunch, informal networking and light-hearted games including axe throwing and giant Jenga — the perfect way to round off the day. outside_corporate_catering_event_edited_-_website_small.jpg
Occasionally we like to shine the spotlight on our members, and in this case one of the members of the Bristol Initiative. We sat down with Laura Reynolds, Destination Director at Cabot Circus to talk about their work and their relationship with the Bristol Initiative.
At Business West, we’re proud to support a diverse network of businesses and organisations - from ambitious start-ups to established firms and charities - all working to make our region stronger and more connected. As part of Mental Health Awareness in May, we’re shining a spotlight on one of our Chamber Members whose work makes a vital difference in the mental health space. We’re proud to feature Suicide Prevention UK as our Chamber Member of the Month, recognising their tireless efforts to support individuals in crisis and the incredible impact they have on individuals, communities, and mental health support across the region.
