What is an ATA Carnet?
An ATA Carnet, often called a 'passport for goods' is a trade document used by businesses when they are exporting goods or equipment temporarily. Whether showcasing commercial samples, attending international trade fairs, or transporting professional equipment, the Carnet simplifies customs procedures and eliminates the need to pay duties and taxes at the point of import.
Digital / eATA Carnets
Building on our legacy of innovation, we are actively participating in the Digital/ eATA Carnet pilot project. This initiative aims to modernise and simplify the traditional paper-based Carnet system, introducing a range of benefits for businesses:
- Sustainability: The Digital/eATA Carnet significantly reduces the use of paper, ink, and energy, contributing to a more sustainable future.
- Reduced administration: Digital processes streamline operations, saving time and effort for businesses.
- Minimised errors and loss: By eliminating the risk of losing physical documents and reducing manual errors, businesses are less likely to face financial penalties from overseas customs.
Digital / eATA Carnet rollout
The pilot is already progressing, with trials underway at key UK ports and airports, including Heathrow, Edinburgh, Belfast and Holyhead. Dover/Folkstone is due to start their trial shortly (at the time of writing, we expect February 2025), with East Midlands and Guernsey airports later this year (to be confirmed), ensuring widespread adoption of Digital Carnets.
Freight forwarders and high-volume customers will gain access to a desktop facility designed to manage their Carnets efficiently.
Pre-declaration functionality will simplify customs processes by allowing freight movements to be declared in advance.
The move to eATA Carnets will be rolled out in phases, beginning with a parallel approach where digital and paper Carnets coexist. This ensures a smooth transition for businesses operating in both digital-ready and traditional markets. Over time, the goal is to transition to a digital system, eliminating the need for paper documentation.
