Insights from Melbourne: Business West at the ICC World Chambers Congress

In September, Business West was invited to represent the UK at the 14th ICC (International Chambers of Commerce) World Chambers Congress in Melbourne, an event that brings together Chambers of Commerce from around the globe to share ideas, innovations, and best practice.

Our Head of International Trade Services, Catherine Stephens, and Director of Commercial Services, James Monk, travelled halfway around the world to take part, joining chamber leaders from more than 100 countries. Catherine was invited to speak on stage, sharing her expertise on Free Trade Agreements and how UK businesses can make better use of the opportunities they present.

After a 22-hour journey and some challenging jetlag, Catherine and James quickly found themselves immersed in a week of inspiring sessions, lively discussions, and valuable networking.
Catherine commented: “It was wonderful to see familiar faces from other chambers I’ve worked with over the years,” she said. “When you’re so far from home, those connections really do feel like family.”

One of the highlights was the World ATA Carnet Council (WATAC) meeting, which focused on the digitisation of ATA Carnets — a subject close to Business West’s heart. Delegates discussed the global rollout of digital systems designed to simplify temporary export procedures and reduce paperwork for traders.
“It was fascinating to see how different countries are approaching digital trade,” Catherine reflected. “There’s a real sense of shared purpose in making global trade smoother and more sustainable.”
The following days included the Certificate of Origin Council meetings, which explored updates to rules of origin, ongoing challenges around US tariffs, and how non-preferential rules are being interpreted internationally. There was plenty of debate, collaboration, and a shared determination to modernise trade documentation systems.
James represented Business West’s pioneering work in ATA Carnet innovation as part of the World Chambers Competition. The event celebrated chamber-led projects from around the world that are driving positive change, and it was a proud moment to see our achievements recognised on a global stage.
James added: "Our innovative developments regarding ATA Carnets had a very receptive audience from the 1,000 delegates at the conference, probably the largest assembly of Carnet issuing chambers in the World. As Digital Carnets are progressively rolled out globally we will ensure that we retain our position at the forefront and support our clients to adapt and take advantage."
