UK exports rise in July as EU trade strengthens
UK exports picked up in July, with the latest figures showing a particularly strong increase in goods sold to the EU.
According to the latest Office for National Statistics (ONS) trade data, the volume of UK goods exports increased by 3.5% in July 2026, after removing the effect of inflation.
This growth was driven by a 7.2% increase in goods exports to the EU, with increases across a range of sectors including vehicles, chemicals, fuels and manufactured goods. Export volumes to countries outside the EU remained unchanged.
Services exports also increased, rising by 0.5% during the month.
Imports also continued to grow. Goods import volumes increased by 2.1% in July, largely because of a 4.2% rise in imports from outside the EU.
A more positive three-month picture
Looking beyond one month, the figures also show some encouraging signs.
In the three months to July, the value of UK goods exports increased by 4.8% compared with the previous three-month period.
Exports to the EU rose by 2.8%, while exports to the rest of the world increased by 6.9%.
Services exports are estimated to have increased by 1% over the same period.
What does this mean for UK exporters?
The July figures are encouraging and show that overseas demand remains strong across a number of markets.
However, international trade conditions continue to change quickly. New trade agreements, changing tariffs, customs requirements, rules of origin and the cost of moving goods can all affect the cost and ease of doing business internationally.
