Why is it important to address menstrual health and menopause in the workplace?

Going through the mental and physical effects of perimenopause and menopause is something that every woman, and individuals assigned female at birth, will experience in their lifetime. It can have a really significant impact on both their personal and professional lives, causing symptoms such as anxiety, depression, loss of confidence and reduced concentration.
According to the CIPD's Menopause in the Workplace report (2023), two-thirds (67%) of women (aged 40 to 60 in employment) with experience of menopausal symptoms say that it has a significant negative impact on them at work.
If there’s a lack of support or recognition in the workplace for employees experiencing menopause symptoms, it can lead to increased absences, negative career progression and high turnover rates.
To mark World Menopause Day this year, we’re sharing a recording from one of our Swindon Mindful Employer Network events, where you’ll hear Karen Heaven from Swindon Borough Council cover the topic of menstrual health and menopause.
Karen discusses the impacts that menopause and menstrual health can have on women in the workplace, and the importance of addressing and supporting employees through policies, dedicated initiatives, and practical support.
