Occasionally we like to shine the spotlight on our members, and in this case one of the members of the Bristol Initiative. We sat down with  Alexandra Holsgrove Jones, Partner at TLT.

Tell us about your role – what do you have responsibility for? What does a typical day look like?

I’m a Partner at TLT, with a role that spans Knowledge, ESG and community engagement. As well as leading the Knowledge function for our Real Estate practice, bringing together Knowledge Lawyers from across the firm to share ideas and develop a more joined-up approach to how we use knowledge. This includes how technology and AI can help us work differently.

I’m TLT’s Partner Sponsor for Community, responsible for overseeing how we use our people, skills and resources to make a positive difference through pro bono work, volunteering and community partnerships. I also host TLT’s ESG in Action podcast, where I speak to colleagues, clients and other guests about different aspects of ESG, with a focus on the practical issues organisations are grappling with, as well as the people and ideas driving change.

There genuinely isn’t a typical day. I might move from a discussion about AI and the future of legal services to a new Knowledge initiative, recording a podcast, or a conversation about a charity or pro bono opportunity. The variety, and the opportunity to bring together different strands of my role, is one of the things I enjoy most.

What does your organisation do? Why do you like working for them?

TLT is a UK law firm, headquartered in Bristol, advising organisations across a wide range of sectors. The firm was established in Bristol in 2000 and has since grown significantly across the UK. Bristol remains an important part of our history and identity, as TLT has grown into a national firm with offices across the UK.

I particularly like TLT's appetite to keep evolving. This applies to the services we provide to clients, but also to the kind of employer and corporate citizen we want to be.

It’s important for me to work somewhere where community impact isn’t separate from the day job. I can bring together my interests in law, Knowledge, innovation, ESG and social impact, and work with colleagues across the business to turn ideas into something practical.

Why have you joined the Bristol Initiative?

For me, the attraction of the Bristol Initiative is the opportunity to connect with other organisations that care about Bristol and the wider region, and to look at what we can achieve collectively rather than in isolation.

TLT has deep roots in Bristol, and we want to contribute positively to the long-term success of the city, not only as a law firm but as a major local employer and member of the business community.

Many of the challenges facing Bristol can’t be addressed effectively by one organisation alone. The Bristol Initiative’s ability to bring businesses together around shared challenges is therefore particularly valuable.

I’m looking forward to learning from other members. There is a huge amount of experience across Bristol’s business community, and I think sharing what works, as well as being honest about where more needs to be done, is an important part of creating lasting change.

What are the key agendas that you’re looking forward to getting involved with?

I’m particularly interested in social mobility and inclusion, education and skills, and how we create opportunities for people who face barriers to entering or progressing in employment. Those are areas where there is a natural connection with TLT’s community and pro bono work and with my own role.

I’m also interested in the broader social value agenda: how businesses can use their skills, people, procurement and partnerships to create meaningful impact in the communities around them.

My offer to other members would be to share what we are learning at TLT and look for opportunities to collaborate. My ask would be similar: tell us what is working, where the gaps are, and where bringing together different organisations could achieve more than any of us can on our own.

Where is your favourite place to visit in Bristol?
My favourite place to visit in Bristol is the Bristol Old Vic. I love theatre, and there is something particularly special about seeing a performance in such a historic venue right in the heart of the city. It has a real sense of Bristol’s character: creative, distinctive and always evolving, while still being incredibly proud of its history.
