In the ever-evolving world of business, we often talk about shaping the future - innovating, planning ahead, and staying competitive. But what if one of the most impactful ways to build the future isn’t in a boardroom, or behind a computer screen? What if it’s in a school, sitting across from a young person who needs your guidance?

Supporting Mock Interview Days is more than just a nice gesture - it’s a powerful way for businesses to invest in their communities and inspire the workforce of tomorrow.

Why Your Support is Crucial

For many young people, the transition from education to employment feels daunting. They need confidence, direction, and a belief that their dreams are achievable. That’s where you—and your expertise—can make an extraordinary impact.

  • Inspiring Dreams: Your story, encouragement, and advice can help students imagine a future they never thought possible.
  • Building Confidence: A supportive conversation with someone from the business world can give a young person the boost they need to believe in their abilities.
  • Guiding Talents: By sharing insights, you can help students understand their strengths and the paths they could take to success.
  • Preparing for Tomorrow: Schools need to know where industries are heading. Your expertise can shine a light on emerging careers, technology trends, and the skills that will matter most.

Your involvement helps create a bridge between the classroom and the workplace—ensuring students aren’t just prepared, but excited for the journey ahead.

What’s In It for Your Business?

Supporting a local school is not only rewarding on a personal level—it’s good for business too.

  • Talent Spotting: Strong relationships with schools can help you identify and nurture potential future employees.
  • Building Brand Reputation: When your company invests in its community, it fosters goodwill and showcases your commitment to making a difference.
  • Personal Growth for Your Team: Volunteering is a great way to step out of your comfort zone, develop communication skills, and build confidence—all of which can positively impact workplace performance.

And let’s not forget the emotional rewards. Many business volunteers say they leave these events inspired, recharged, and proud of the difference they’ve made.

The Courage to Step Up

We all know stepping into the unknown can be intimidating. Maybe you’re worried about connecting with young people or saying the “right” thing. But here’s the truth: it’s not about being perfect—it’s about showing up.

Volunteering at a Mock Interview Day is about opening doors for someone who might not yet see their potential. And, often, it opens doors for you too. It’s a chance to reflect on your own journey, step outside your day-to-day, and find renewed purpose in helping others. Business West offers two volunteering days a year to its employees. Here’s what one of our volunteers had to say about supporting a school …

“This was my second-year volunteering at St. Katharine’s School’s Futures Day. It was great to hear aspiring future game designers, physiotherapists, pharmacists, architects, construction workers, and researchers describe their hopes and dreams for the future. Through our work on the delivery of the local-skills-improvement-plans, we understand just just how important secondary school encounters with employers and employees are; not only for school children and local employers, but these sorts of activities are integral to building the skills of a nation. If you’re a professional looking to support your local community then mentorship, careers talks, and mock interviews can be a great way to help a young person orientate the world of work.” Huw James, Policy Planning and delivery specialist.

A Legacy You’ll Be Proud Of

When you look back on your career, what will stand out as your proudest moments? It might not be the quarterly reports or the deadlines you met—but the lives you impacted, the people you helped, and the dreams you nurtured.

By giving just a few hours of your time, you have the chance to inspire the next generation, shape their futures, and, perhaps, leave behind a legacy that will truly make you proud.
