When was the last time you gave your customs processes a proper check-up? For many businesses trading internationally, it’s easy to assume everything is fine until HMRC come knocking, and by then, the costs and disruption can be serious. That’s why we’ve introduced our new Customs Health Check service, delivered in partnership with customs specialists Gaston Schul.
Last Thursday evening, Bristol Initiative members met at Gloucestershire County Cricket Ground for the penultimate Quarterly Members’ Evening of the year. The event came at a pivotal moment for the region, as the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority unveiled its new Growth Strategy, an ambitious, action-oriented plan to drive inclusive economic growth over the next decade.
From 1st October, Business West will be developing new LSIPs (Local Skills Improvement Plans) for the West of England and North Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Somerset (in partnership with Somerset Chamber of Commerce). Funded by the Department for Education, LSIPs are employer-led initiatives that align post-16 technical education and training with the needs of local employers and economies.
Recently, we hosted our US export 101 for food & beverage brands webinar. Our speakers, Jane McKay (Astute Ideas) and Catherine Stephens (Business West), shared practical insights for food and drink brands considering entry into the US market.
As the dust settles on last week’s Business West AGM, it’s clear that we are not only weathering the economic storms but actively driving long-term prosperity for businesses and our region. The event was a powerful reflection on transformation, resilience, and the enduring role of Business West as a convenor, enabler, and champion for businesses across the South West.

Reacting to the announcement by the US President of new 100% US tariffs on pharmaceutical imports, William Bain, Head of Trade Policy, said: “This will create fresh uncertainty for the UK’s pharmaceutical companies. However, the Economic Prosperity Deal commits the US to negotiate significantly preferential arrangements for the UK on these levies."
